Lena Revenko's Work

I came across an artist/illustrator named Lena Revenko, and I find her work absolutely captivating, striking, strange, thought-provoking, colorful, alluring, beautiful, bizarre, unique, and full of a slightly twisted imagination, which I love. Her use of patterns in unexpected places along with unusual relationships between people and animals make her work really interesting to me.

LE ROUGE WARRIOR

In thinking about my Project 2 travel poster (I'm doing mine on Montana in a tribal style illustration of a wolf), I decided to look for some other interesting tribal art. This image caught my eye right away.

I love the line work on the fox, especially the white on gray. The addition of the colors and patterns on select parts of the fox, and the way the tail actually looks like a feather is striking. I'm always attracted to animals in illustration (that's probably becoming obvious), and "Le Rouge Warrior" is beautiful and somewhat unique in terms of what I've seen before. What do you think?

Fly on the beautiful wings of Piedra Negra coffee!

The Dieline (the best of packaging design website) is a great source of inspiration, as is the Dieline Awards website, which is where these images were found.

I love these intricately illustrated and stylized wing designs found on Piedra Negra coffee packaging. The bursts of colors are gorgeous and stand out on both black and white backgrounds. The finely detailed line work is really appealing to me as well. Seeing the packaging on a shelf would definitely catch my eye; I would most certainly pick it up to look more closely at the beautiful details.

To me, it's exciting to see amazing illustration being used in packaging design! It's so aesthetically pleasing...classy...timeless.

Comments on The Dieline Awards page include that the wings are reminiscent of Monarch butterfly wings, which is in keeping with tradition of Latin American brands to reference a sense of heritage.

 From the website:
"Piedra Negra is an organic arabica coffee brand hailing from Ecuador. Quito based Aima created the graphic design and illustration for the coffee bags, drawing from their inspirations of mysticism and world travel. With 'Tales to share' as a call to action, this design banks on the universal coffee paradigm of getting together over a cup of coffee."

BIRD SCHOOL by Tim Biskup: Whimsical Birds, Great Artist

I love animal illustrations of all kinds. I especially enjoy really creative, unusual, unique ones. I am so drawn to this Tim Biskup painting, "Bird School." It's so eye catching and aesthetically appealing to me! Busy, yes, but I love looking at an image and finding a lot of really interesting details. In Bird School, there are some wonderful patterns on some of the birds' bodies, tails, and wings. Also, most if not all of the birds are translucent and allow other bird or bird parts show through. This reminds me of tissue paper collage works I've seen. Actually, this reminds me of Paul Klee, one of my favorite artists.

One of the most appealing aspects of this piece is the color scheme. The mix of rich reds, oranges, and golds along with teals, beiges, blues and variants of all of these, works wonderfully against the black background. The black background is perhaps what pulls it together for me. This is what I call eye candy.

The shapes of the birds are strange and whimsical. These are birds that live in the artist's imagination. I also enjoy the zigzagged lines that are used at the ends of tails and crests. They remind me of children's illustrations, and I think children would be drawn to this piece as well. It makes one wonder where they are, how many are there that aren't even shown, what the sounds would be like, and other questions that come to mind. The title choice, "Bird School," could be because the birds appear to almost be in water, like a school of fish. Or, it could be that the biggest, most prominent bird, the red and orange one in the middle, is the teacher and the rest are the students. And, it's like they are so close in proximity and maybe they're interacting, but they look like they don't care about each other's presence! In any case, it's absolutely charming to me.

I checked out Tim Biskup's website, and he has created some other really amazing pieces (He's fairly prolific and uses different mediums, but he seems to be primarily a painter). Check these out too:
