BIRD SCHOOL by Tim Biskup: Whimsical Birds, Great Artist

I love animal illustrations of all kinds. I especially enjoy really creative, unusual, unique ones. I am so drawn to this Tim Biskup painting, "Bird School." It's so eye catching and aesthetically appealing to me! Busy, yes, but I love looking at an image and finding a lot of really interesting details. In Bird School, there are some wonderful patterns on some of the birds' bodies, tails, and wings. Also, most if not all of the birds are translucent and allow other bird or bird parts show through. This reminds me of tissue paper collage works I've seen. Actually, this reminds me of Paul Klee, one of my favorite artists.

One of the most appealing aspects of this piece is the color scheme. The mix of rich reds, oranges, and golds along with teals, beiges, blues and variants of all of these, works wonderfully against the black background. The black background is perhaps what pulls it together for me. This is what I call eye candy.

The shapes of the birds are strange and whimsical. These are birds that live in the artist's imagination. I also enjoy the zigzagged lines that are used at the ends of tails and crests. They remind me of children's illustrations, and I think children would be drawn to this piece as well. It makes one wonder where they are, how many are there that aren't even shown, what the sounds would be like, and other questions that come to mind. The title choice, "Bird School," could be because the birds appear to almost be in water, like a school of fish. Or, it could be that the biggest, most prominent bird, the red and orange one in the middle, is the teacher and the rest are the students. And, it's like they are so close in proximity and maybe they're interacting, but they look like they don't care about each other's presence! In any case, it's absolutely charming to me.
